Matti May Hardie

Hey all, hows you?

Now, I'm aware that this post is rather late, but I couldn't not post it because I don't think I've had this many favourites for ages!

As I mentioned in a previous post, I’m trying to teach myself Korean, as you do. I’m always looking for sites that can help me learn some vocab, but also grammar points so that I can actually form a sentence because that’s always nice. I was having a little look around and found this really cool website (with the coolest name haha) and now I’m trying to learn some new vocab thanks to this website.

Peaky Blinders
Source

Mama had told me about this series a while ago, but, being totally consumed by Korean dramas, I hadn’t really considered looking into it. But the other day, after reading an article about how many cigarettes Cillian Murphy (who plays Tommy Shelby in the series) had smoked whilst playing the character, I decided to watch the first episode and enjoyed it, but didn’t watch anymore for a reason I can’t remember. Then, last Saturday, I was doing my make-up and decided to pop something on so that I could watch something (downside to watching dramas are that you have to read the subtitles so in turn, it’s impossible to multitask whilst watching it) aaaaand now I’m addicted. I’ve just finished season 1 in my dorm room and this weekend Mama and I are going to start on season 2 together. It’s set in post-war Birmingham and follows the story of the “Peaky Blinders” gang, consisting principally of the Shelby brothers.

Kpopalypse
Source
I was looking for a photo for my k-pop blog and came across this blog through a photo on it. It’s written by an Australian radio DJ who has a radio show where he plays exclusively k-pop and decided to create a blog to go along with the radio show (also called Kpopalypse). His humour is very sarcastic, but that’s my favourite kind of humour so it was right up my street. So if you’re into k-pop and aren’t easily offended, go and have a look at this blog because he makes me laugh so much!

Liquid eyeliner
Eyeliner

I have a really bad habit of sticking with one type of make-up product if I like it. I don’t even bother looking for anything else. For eyeliner, it was always going to be felt-tip liner. I’d tried liquid eyeliner when I was younger and a lot more inexperienced and had had a really bad experience with it, so I decided that I would never bother trying again. But my felt-tip liner ran out recently, so I reluctantly grabbed the liquid eyeliner my cousin had given to me and that had been lying around, neglected, since last summer. With a bit of fiddling, it looked really good. I actually almost preferred it looked compared to the felt-tip liner. I would tell you guys what liquid eyeliner I use but the packaging is so worn that I don’t actually know.

Game Of Thrones
Screen Shot 2016-06-30 at 15.17.09.png
Game. Of. Fucking. Thrones people!! I'm so happy I finally got on that bandwagon! My friend Marion got me started on this series. I'd always wanted to watch it, but I'd just never gotten around to watching it. Then Marion started watching it and I thought "fuck it" and downloaded the first 2 seasons. Then I got through the first season in one weekend... So I downloaded up until the season 4... and then finished season 2 in a week. Long story short, I finished 6 seasons in 2 months, give or take seeing as I had exams and stuff like that, so let's say a month and a half. You see my problem?! You see why I never get anything done?! So yeah, go watch it, it's amazing and everyone dies. You'll love it. Valar Morghulis! (500 brownie points to those who understand what that means).
Book, Lipstick and Bracelet
Beauty Success Lipstick
I’m trying to use different products that I haven’t used in an age at the moment, and to rediscover some old favourites, and out of it came this little gem - it’s from Beauty Success  (a french makeup shop) and it’s in the shade N°1 Nude Mat. It’s a really nice pinky nude with some peachy, corally tones in it too and it’s perfect to just whack on every day, seeing as sometimes you can get sick of Kate Moss 107 every single day of the year. The only thing I could fault it for is its texture which is a bit oily for my tastes, and also makes it a bit impractical for applying it as it’s best to layer to get the best colour payoff possible.
Paperchase Notepad
Trigger warning: stationery porn. Look at it! It’s so pretty I could cry! I mean when Mama told me she had gotten me a notepad with parrots on it, I was… unimpressed to say the least. But actually they’ve grown on me (I have yet to name them, feel free to propose some names in the comments). Plus it’s perfect for blog post prepping and everything surround my blogs.
Notebook, Pen and Hair Oil
Charm Bracelet
This was a birthday present from Mama, and it’s super pretty. It’s like a Pandora bracelet but a lot less expensive (I do not have the money to justify spending 40€ on a charm). I only have three charms for the moment but I plan on buying other ones at specific times (after my exams, at Christmas, those kinds of things). Sadly, I can't link it because my Mum bought it at her work and they don't have a
Hair Oil
I’ve always been afraid of using oil. I’m always scared that I’m going to use too much and I’m going to end up disgusting and oily and that’s not my thing. Anyway, I’ve always been afraid of using hair oil because I was worried I was going to use too much and make my hair really greasy and oily so I’d try to stay away . Then I tried this oil and it totally changed my opinion. It makes my hair look so much more healthy and nice and it makes my hair actually wearable instead of this lump of hay sitting on my head. Though I'm afraid I can't find a link to it anywhere, but if you stumble upon this and your hair needs a bit of encouragement, pick it up. You can thank me later.

I love to read, but it pains me to say that so few of them get the recognition they deserve. So I wanted to use this post to talk about some of my favourite books that I love and I wish more people know about.

Children Of The Most High by Anna Scanlon
I got this book from a giveaway on Anna's blog and it intrigued me straight away. It's about an amish girl called Rebecca who is raped by her boyfriend, but when she told someone about it, it was brushed off and she was told to forgive him and put it in the past. Feeling abandonned and lost, she finds consolation in the most unlikely of places.
This is a really beautiful book that tackles a really touchy subject that is always going to be current (sadly so). I really enjoyed it and I'm really looking forward to reading the sequel. The only criticism I could give it is that it was a bit too long and it goes on a bit too much.

The One Before The One by Katy Regan

Okay, I know this sounds like a chicflick... well... it kind of is but! It's not just any chicflick. It's about a woman called Caroline who, two months before, had called off her wedding with her childhood sweetheart, and she's racked with guilt about it, drowning her sorrows in Pinot Grigio. Oh, and meanwhile, she's got an undeniable crush on the married Toby Delaney. Then, to top it all off, her little sister Lexi turns up on her doorstep, saying she's come to stay for the summer.
It's both cringey, heartwarming and hilarious all at the same time, plus it's beautifully written.

Before I Die by Jenny Downham

I borrowed this off a friend last summer (still haven't given it back - whoops) and I read it in about a week. I will warn you now, it will depress you, but it's so worth it. It's about a girl called Tessa who has been diagnosed with cancer and hasn't got long left to live. With this in the forefront of her mind, she writes a list of everything she wants to do before she dies. The book is basically her battling with cancer and trying to complete the list. It's one of the few (very few) books that made me cry, it beautifully shows how she's forced to fast-forward her adolescence so she doesn't feel like she's missed out of anything. It isn't the most joyous book in the world but it's amazing nonetheless.

The Lost Art Of Keeping Secrets by Eva Rice

I wanted to finish this post off on a good note with my favourite book. I have read this book countless times and I fall in love with it every time I read it. Set in 1950, it's about a girl called Penelope, living in a vast mansion in post war Britain with her mother and her brother, yet all Penelope really wants to do is fall in love. When she meets Charlotte, who invites her to tea with her aunt Clare and her cousin Harry, everything changes. Especially when Harry asks to pose as his new girlfriend, to make his famous and beautiful american ex-girlfriend jealous, which makes everything swirl out of line for Penelope.
This is an amazing coming of age tale which has romance, drama, shocks, and I have no idea why but I love it.

What books do you love that don't have enough recognition?

I’m going to try and not make this the most depressing post ever because I feel like that’s all I post nowadays and that’s not what I want this blog to turn into so let’s try and keep this upbeat, okay?

Let’s just say that I don’t reaaally know what I’m doing with this blog anymore. This started off with me posting (crap) beauty posts and the occasional lifestyle post thrown into the mix too just to make it a bit more interesting. But as I’ve tried to grow my “brand” (please don’t virtually punch me for saying that, I’ve already done it myself), I’ve moulded this blog to make it a bit broader and generally more interesting for both you, the reader and me, the blogger. Problem is, I’ve kind of hit a plateau, and I don’t really know what I want to do with this blog anymore.

Don’t get me wrong, I love this blog with all my heart, and I want to write it for years and years and it will always have a special place in my heart - but I don’t want it to get stale either.

I’ve found myself wanting to talk about different things, like hairdressing and k-pop, or mental health or sexuality, but often I stop myself because I’m afraid that people aren’t going to be interested in that, so they’ll stop reading. Slowly but surely, I’m basically writing the same posts over and over, no original, fresh content, just rehashed, dull-as-dishwater, follow-the-heard, crap that is totally boring and that even I wouldn’t read (which is rather bad when you think that even the blogger whom the blog belongs to wouldn’t read her own stuff, isn’t it?). I’m no longer proud of what I’m putting up, and I’m even getting sick of looking at the same design all the time. and it’s the that I realised I needed to take action.

I thought about it long and hard and decided to take a break from Matti May Hardie for 1 or 2 weeks to decide a lot of things, without having to pressure myself to write posts that I know will ultimately get deleted. This whole blog shall be going offline for one week (sob) as of the 25th and will be going back up either on the 2nd or the 9th. During this break, I’m going to be rethinking everything about this blog, down to how my pages are laid out and how I start the posts. I wouldn’t call it a rebranding, because it’s not, it’s just a bit of change, a spring clean if you will.

Until then, I have a couple of pre-written posts that will be going up so don't worry your pretty heads about that.

So on Wednesday, in the dorms, I turned my friend Marion’s hair from a dark blond-ish colour, to a vibrant (and bloody gorgeous) bright blue with touches of purple. I had taken loads of photos and I decided to turn it into a blog post in case anyone was interested to find out how I did it.

In this post I'll be covering every aspect, from the bleaching to the dying to the aftercare so I'd suggest you get yourself a cuppa before hand.

Just for a point of reference, this is what Marion’s hair looked like before we decided to bleach the fuck out of it (It’s actually a bit lighter since her roots had come through. (Dark blond and her ends were black since she still had the remnants of her dark brown dye on them)

Bleaching
I’m using the Coiffeo “Oxydant creme” in a 40 volume and a powder bleach.

First things first, like 90% bright, artificial colours, you have to bleach your hair. However, you don’t just rub a bit of bleach on you hair, rub it in and wait 20 minutes. Do that and you’ll burn your scalp and you’ll end up with burn marks all over your head and you can kiss goodbye to doing anything with your hair until they heal up.

To prepare your hair for the bleach, make sure it's not freshly washed. Leave it for 3 days I'd say, depending on if you have easily greasy hair or not.

First off, you have to do a first bleach. I would recommend you go to the hairdresser’s for the bleaching since it’s pretty delicate but some people (like some people *coughcough* me *coughcough*) can’t afford to, or they have a friend to do it so I’m going to go through it anyway. As I was saying, you need to apply a first bleach, but only on the lengths of your hair (as you can see in the photo, the bleach is only applied to the lengths and you can still see that the roots are untouched, this is what you’re going for). The bleach will see to take pretty quickly, but you have to leave it for 45 minutes so that you get the lightness you’re looking for.

About 30 minutes in, take a bit of bleach off the hair with a cotton pad or a tissue to check the hair is taking the bleach properly. If not, then reapply the bleach onto the piece of hair.

As you can see, the bleach takes well if it’s applied properly and you should be pretty light by the time you’re finished. Once the 45 minutes are up, rince the bleach out thoroughly (don’t shampoo) and dry equally as thoroughly. The hair has to be totally dry before you move on to the next bleach.

If you have hair like Marion’s, your hair will probably look a little something like this:

Your hair should be a bit of a brassy blond and the roots should be unchanged.

Next you need to do the second bleach, which you apply all over the hair, even on the roots. You need to do it quite fast so that the bleach takes evenly all over the head. Pre-warning, it’s going to be itchy. Don’t worry, it doesn’t last long at all. Leave the bleach on for 5 minutes, and check every minute or so to see if the bleach has taken. (Note: It’s during this bleaching that we bleached Marion’s side cut, too, since it’s too short for us to do just the ends.)

Again, once the waiting time is up, do the same as before and rinse thoroughly (again, don’t shampoo, just rinse it out) and dry really well, so that the hair is totally dry. It needs to be properly dry before you even think about the colour because if it’s not the dye won’t take properly and it’ll look a bit weird.

(Unfortunately I don't have a photo of Marion after the second bleach - soz about that.)

Keep bleaching and leaving it for 5 minutes until it’s platinum white (there or there abouts, don’t bleach your hair off trying to make it perfect!)

Colouring
As I said, Marion wanted blue all over her hair, her side-cut and the edges of her fringe purple. For the blue, I’ll be using La Riché’s “Directions” semi-permanent colour in “Violet” and for the blue I’ll be using Star Gazer dye in “Sky Blue”.

So once your hair is dry apply the blue all over your hair, whilst avoiding anywhere you want to put the purple. Then, simple take a new brush and apply the purple wherever you want it. You don't need to be too precise when adding the purple since I feel it looks better when there isn't

One thing I would point out is that you need to make sure that the dye is distributed properly all over the hair, if not, then the dye won’t take properly and it’ll look weirdly pastel, like and just generally it won’t look right.

Once the dye has been applied, massage your hair and leave it for 45 minutes to take. Once the time is up, wash it out thoroughly and shampoo with a shampoo specific for colours twice, then you can apply a mask if you want to (I’d strongly recommend investing in a good hair mask since your hair is probably going to be very dry and damaged because of everything it’s gone through!

After-care
The after-care is probably one of the most important steps. If you don't keep your hair in good condition it can ruin the look of your hair and will spoil the colour.

You're going to be looking for a shampoo specific to coloured hair. I would recommend the Elseve "Color Vive" Shampoo because I feel like it helps the colour remain intact for as long as possible.

For conditioning, there are two things I'd recommend: an intense hair mask and a regular conditionner. Use the hair mask once or twice (max) a week, and the conditionner every time you wash your hair.

Marion uses the Franck Provost "Expert Reparateur" for the deep mask and the Petit Marseillais "Intense Nutrition" conditioner.

I hope you enjoyed this post, I really enjoy writing these kinds of posts! And thank you to my friend Marion for modeling for me in the photos (get ready to see a lot more of her, guys, I think she may become my official model so I can avoid looking so awkward in outfit posts!). You can find her on Instagram and Twitter.

Let me know down in the comments if you've ever tried something like this.

I haven’t done a make-up menu in what feels like ages, simply because for ages I was wearing the same thing; but now I have (finally) changed up my make-up routine so I thought I’d share what I’m currently wearing to mask my actual face at the moment.

Base

Until I find a better foundation that fits my skin tone as well as the Rimmel “Match Perfection”, I don’t think I’m going to change. I’ve raved about this foundation on many occasions so I won’t start again, but I really just love this foundation okay?
As a concealer, I’ve been really loving (like most of the world, in fact) the Urban Decay “Naked” concealer. I use it on both my disgusting eye bags and any (all the) blemishes I may (always) have.
For a powder, again, I’m still using the Rimmel “Stay Matte” powder because I love it so very much.
Though I often will also dust a bit of the Caudalie “Teint Divin” bronzing mineral powder to give myself a bit of colour since I can’t use bronzing powder (since whenever I use bronzing powder, the word oompa-loompa generally springs to mind).

Eyes

I have recently fallen back in love with liquid eyeliner. I generally just do a thin line on my lid using the Bourjois “16h Liner Pinceau” liquid liner (that is so old I’d be shocked if they still sell it) (update: they do), though if I’m feeling a bit swish, I may also do a lil’ flick. Then I line my top waterline in with an unnamed pencil liner (again, so used and sharpened I’ve forgotten what the name and brand of it is - I really need to buy some new make-up!).
For my mascara, I’ve been switching between two different ones that I love with equal mesures. The first one is the Bobbi Brown "Smoky Eye" mascara and the other one is the rather more affordable one, Maybelline “Lash Sensational”. I apply a couple of coats on my top and bottom lashes.

Blush and Highlight

For my blush and highlight, well, I’m pretty easy as I only own one of each! I use both the blush and the highlight from the Urban Decay “On The Run” palette (see the review I did of it here). For the blush, well, no need to go in to reems of detail, I apply it to my cheeks, simples. For the highlight, if I’m taking my time and want to do my make-up all fancy, then I’ll apply it to my eyebrow bone, my cheekbone, down the bridge of my nose and on my cupid’s bow, if not, then I’ll just run it down the bridge of my nose and on my eyebrow bone.

Lips

Depending on what I’ve done with my eyes, I’ll use one of two things for my lips. If I’ve gone easy on the eyes, I’ll generally reach for my MAC “Lady Danger” lipstick (which hurts my heart every time because I don’t quite know if I can afford to use it on a daily basis!), and if I’ve gone a bit stronger on my eyes, I’ll use the Urban Decay "NAKED Ultra Nourishing Lipgloss".

What have you been wearing this month?

So next week I'm 16. That's crazy, as I feel like it was just yesterday that I was turning 15. I did a post like this last year, so I wanted to do another one, because I've learnt a lot over this past year.

To be honest I still can't quite believe I'm going to be 16 soon.

1. Never write e-mails whilst you're still angry. Go outside and breath. Then come back, make yourself a cup of tea, and write the e-mail slowly and carefully. Take care of what you say, you may regret it later on.

2.  It's totally fine to not be interested in sex. You don't have to have sex or sexual activity with anyone if you don't want to. That doesn't make you weird, or wrongly wired. You can love someone without wanting sex with them; that doesn't mean you love or care about them any less.

3. Bright candy pink lipsticks never have and never will be flattering on anyone ever.

4. Never judge someone based on how they dress/look, they may just be the nicest person you'll ever meet.

5. Hangovers are a very painful experience. The best way to treat them is McDonald's - just sayin'.

6. When you leave high school, you're not going to remain in contact with everyone, let alone remain friends.

7. Listen to your elders, they see and understand more than they let on.

8. You're not aloud to dress well until you're at least 13, before then it's right of passage to dress like crap and play on gamesforgirls.com - we've all gone through it.

9. Nothing is permanent

10. People change. You can't stop that. People who really love you will embrace that no matter what.

11. You can dress and act however you like.

12. You won't always necessarily discover that a relationship is unhealthy right away. Sometimes it takes someone to call them out for you to notice it.

13. You're not always going to have the same views as your parents.

14. It's cool to be different.

15. Things get a lot better after high school.

16. Every move you make and every word you speak should be calculated and thought through. Use you words carefully.

What have you learnt during your years of living? Let me know in the comments.
